Make a Template For Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl Flooring

One challenge for many homeowners is how to fit the vinyl around fixtures that might be in the room where you want to lay the vinyl flooring. With vinyl tiles this can be a relatively easy task, but with vinyl flooring sheets it is a slightly more difficult. The solution to this problem is to make a paper template.

Using a sheet of butcher paper or other durable paper, lay out a piece of paper next to the foot of the fixture. Then use a pencil and draw around the edge of the fixture. You might find that you need to use a couple of pieces of paper in order to get the entire shape of the fixture for your template. Then use scissors and cut out the shape of the template. You will use this when you get to laying the vinyl flooring around this fixture.

Vinyl Flooring Materials

Vinyl flooring materials need to be stored in a warm room or location. If it is a cold day outside or you are planning on laying vinyl flooring materials during the winter, make sure that you bring the materials inside so that they can stay warm. You need to make sure the vinyl flooring materials have been inside for a minimum of two days. This is so that the vinyl plank, vinyl tiles or vinyl sheet are flexible enough to work with.

Once the vinyl materials are warm, then you can lay them out on the floor to see how pliable they are and how well they fit the floor space. Start by fitting the vinyl flooring material against a corner of the room and against a wall. It works best if you choose to start with a wall that is the largest in the room.

Slowly roll the vinyl flooring material away from the wall and see how well it fits against it and into the corner. If the fit looks good to you, then it is time to start trimming.

You will need a sharp knife or vinyl trimming tool to cut and trim the edges of the vinyl sheet material. Lay the vinyl as flat as possible, trim the edge of it, leaving an overlap from the wall of at least 2 to 3 inches.

As you lay the vinyl across the floor, trim along the walls to make a large piece of vinyl that will fit the entire floor space. Now trim the entire vinyl flooring space so that the vinyl fits snugly against the walls and fixtures.

Once you have your vinyl flooring laid down and installed, it is very easy to take care of and will last for years. Simply use warm water with a mild soap mixture and mop the floor when it gets dirty.
